Protectionist ($3.80) stormed home to win the Melbourne Cup (3200m) by more than four lengths in his most recent appearance at the races, and as a result currently occupies the top line of 2015 Peter Young Stakes betting with Ladbrokes.com.au ahead of Happy Trails ($5) and Mourinho ($7).

Will Protectionist return to racing in the best way possible, or will one of his rivals force an upset in the 2015 Peter Young Stakes?

Mourinho ($7)

Previously unable to post much of a consistent run of form, Mourinho has undoubtedly found career-best condition over the last six months and as a result is more than worth consideration for a Peter Young Stakes bet at generous $7 odds. Securing a career total of eight wins and nine minors from 33 competitive starts, the Oratorio gelding was unlucky to be balloted out of Cox Plate contention in spring after running second in the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) and winning the Listed Cranbourne Cup (2025m) most notably, but returned this season with a commanding victory over a field including the likes of Dissident in the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m). Having run on for a credible third in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) a fortnight ago, Mourinho will leave from the ideal barrier 6 on Saturday.

Au Revoir ($21)

Beginning his career abroad in France, Au Revoir arrived in Australia for a tilt at the 2014 Melbourne Cup, and has already stamped his claims as one to watch over his few competitive starts. Placing a credible fourth amongst talented company in the Group 2 Prix Foy (2400m) in his final French appearance before debuting to Australia for third in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Cup (2500m), Au Revoir ran home strong to finish eighth in the Melbourne Cup before breaking through for an impressive win in the Group 2 Zipping Classic (2400m) less-than two weeks later. Confirmed to be partnered by Ben Melham, Au Revoir arguably offers punters the best value for money in 2015 Peter Young Stakes betting markets.

Protectionist ($3.80)

While undoubtedly the class horse of the 2015 Peter Young Stakes field, Protectionist has not contested a race under 2000m since his maiden preparation in 2012, and is yet to hit peak fitness according to trainer Kris Lees. Beginning his racing tenure under the guidance of Andreas Wohler, the Monsun entire displayed a keen turn of foot to finish fourth in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) in debut in Australia, in what was his only spring start prior to the Melbourne Cup. Having trialled well in Newcastle earlier this month, Protectionist is sure to produce a competitive performance in the 2015 Peter Young Stakes.
