2011 St George Stakes – Final Field & Barrier Draw Announced

February 23rd, 2011

The final field has been released this morning for the 2011 St George Stakes that will run as part of Caulfield’s Blue Diamond Stakes Day this Saturday February 26, 2011.

The Group 2 St George Stakes will be run over 1,800 metres and under standard weight-for-age conditions.

The $200,000 St George Stakes will run as Race 8 at 5.10pm (AEDST).

Odds for the 2011 St George Stakes will be released at Luxbet closer to Saturday’s race.

The 2011 St George Stakes has attracted some of the biggest names in Australian racing, including Mark Kavanagh’s Shocking and Mick Price’s Heart Of Dreams.

Shocking has drawn barrier 9 in the 2011 St George Stakes and will be ridden by jockey Corey Brown.

Shocking will be looking for a better second-up performance after finishing 11th of 14 in the C.F. Orr Stakes last start at Caulfield.

The five-year-old will be out to mimic last preparation when he came from a disappointing first-up run to win the Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes.

Shocking has won six of his 25 starts so far, including the 2009 Melbourne Cup.

Heart Of Dreams put in a spectacular performance in the C.F. Orr Stakes last start, just finishing second to Typhoon Tracy by a short head after storming home from the rear of the field.

The five-year-old gelding is sure to benefit from the jump in distance, giving him time to run down his competition.

Heart Of Dreams has been unlucky in the 2011 St George Stakes barrier draw, drawing the widest gate of 14 for the race.

The Show A Heart gelding will be ridden by jockey Damien Oliver in the 2011 St George Stakes and will carry 59 kilograms.

Also included in the final field is Robert Hickmott’s Linton, who is looking for his third Group win of his career.

Linton finished 9th last start on February 12, but has drawn a good barrier (4) for the 2011 St George Stakes, and will be looking to improve on his last run.

Linton has won three of his ten starts so far and has earned almost $400,000 in prize money.

Bart Cummings is represented twice in the field, with both Faint Perfume and Precedence running in Saturday’s race.

Faint Perfume has failed to win a race since April, 2010, when she won the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes.

The 2009 Crown Oaks winner has drawn barrier eight for the 2011 St George Stakes and will carry 57 kilograms, which is 1.5 kilograms less than any other horse in the field.

Precedence will be hoping that he can continue his winning luck, after last preparation saw him win two Group races.

Also in the field are John Thompson’s Trusting (13), Ciaron Maher’s Moudre (6) and David HayesRebel Soldier (10).
