Nominations For 2010 St George Stakes

February 16th, 2010

Melbourne is gearing up to hold one of its elite race days this Saturday; the Blue Diamond Stakes Day, which will take place at the stunning Caulfield Racecourse.

While the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) will be drawing the main attention, the fourth race of the day – the 2010 St George Stakes will be host to some premier racing.

The Group 2 event has prize money of $200,000 up for grabs and has seen 18 horses nominated for the weight-for-age race.

The 2010 St George Stakes will be the debut Australian event for the David Hayes-trained Changingoftheguard. The four-year-old had a strong career in the UK, and will hope Saturday’s race will provide a positive start to his Australian campaign.

Hayes also has Our Aqaleem entered, and although the six-year-old had an impressive win in the Henry Bucks Best Dressed Handicap (1600m) in January, looks to skip the 2010 St George Stakes. The third entrant for Hayes is the five-year-old Zagreb who recently won the Holdfast Insurance Birthday Cup (1800m) at Morphettville.

The 2009 Melbourne Cup winner, Shocking, is another strong contender.

The 2009 Melbourne Cup winner, Shocking, is another strong contender for the race. However the four-year-old struggled in the shorter distance at the Group 1 C F Orr Stakes (1400m) earlier  in February.

Kicking off the proceedings on Saturday will be the Blue Diamond Stud Stakes, with the Group 2 D’Urban Stakes (1400m), the Group 2 Armanasco Stakes (1400m) and the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes all running too.
